Block Scheduling
The four-by-four (4 X 4) Block Schedule requires that a student take four ninety-minute classes per term. This means that the student will only have to keep up with four teachers and four classes on a daily basis. Each term will run for a total of ninety days, at the end of which a final exam will be given. The student will earn one unit of credit for each class passed per term. With four classes per term, a student can earn up to eight credits toward graduation in one school year.
Block Scheduling Policy
Powell valley High School will be on a four-by-four block schedule for the 2002-03 school year.
The school will consist of two ninety-day terms.
Students will receive one unit of credit for each course passed. There will be no half credits with the exception of those classes taken through the Electronic Classroom.
Each class period will be ninety minutes in length.
Good attendance is essential due to extended class periods.
Each student will take four courses per term with the exception of Marketing Education s who are in the co-op program.
Students shall be declared VHSL eligible if they have passed three courses during the preceding term.
Only one required English course and one required social studies course may be taken per school year unless a student needs to take a repeat course.
Whenever possible, students will take only one core course per subject area (english, math, science, social studies, etc.) per term.
A class tardy will become an absence after thirty minutes (one-third of the block period).
Students and parents will be notified when a student's absences in any class become excessive.
Transfer students will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Early graduation will be an option if all requirements are met according to School Board policy.
Make-up work must be completed according to School Board policy.
Students will pre-register for both terms of the upcoming year in the spring of each school year.
Necessary schedule changes may be made during the week preceding the beginning of each term. No schedule changes will be made after the second day of each term except for administrative changes.
Report Cards will be distributed at the end of each six-weeks grading period.

It is recommended that students select a maximum of five Academic courses per school year. At least three selections should be Elective courses.
